• Sit down with your teen and plan the redesign. Keep an open mind in regard to her suggestions; this is an opportunity for her to express herself and you don't want to stifle that. Ensure your teen understands that it will be an open dialogue both directions, so the room is successfully redecorated so you're both happy. Set goals of features you want to include, such as a study area. Rearranging the furniture in the space will give the room a completely new look and feel.
  
  

Decor and Style

• Patterns are popular with teens, so let her get a little funky. Solid-colored walls with large patterns may be as crazy as she will want to get. Consider painting existing furniture and using existing pieces for new purposes. Adding new hardware to a dresser or desk will give it new life. Include more seating and even mismatched chairs for her friends to sit on while visiting or studying together.
  
  

Color

• Just because your teen wants to paint the room black doesn't mean it is a bad thing. Let her choose a paint color and if it is too overwhelming, compromise on other elements in the room to offset it. If black is the chosen color, give her an accent wall to paint black, while maintaining a neutral color elsewhere. Or, let her paint the entire room a solid color, but maintain white doors and trim.
  
  

Accessories

• Accessories will complete the look in your teen's redecorated room. Many teens like to post pictures, create unique accents and fill their rooms with personal touches. Let your teen accessorize individually, but ensure it ties into the necessities in the room, such as a lamp for studying. Let your teen pick the lamp. Oversized pillows may be used on the floor for lounging. Unique blinds or a shade may be placed on the windows. Let him find a one-of-a kind chair for the desk.
