    Cutting the Afro with Clippers

    • 1). Select a style and length for the Afro to be cut. You can cut the Afro very short and shape it around the head, or you can allow it to grow long and simply trim it up. You will need to know how long the Afro needs to be before attempting to cut it.

    • 2). Adjust the hair clippers to the longest setting or attach a guard that is appropriate in size to the length you want the Afro to be. If the Afro will be longer than the longest clipper setting or guard it will not be necessary to adjust the setting of the guard.

    • 3). Cut the Afro beginning with the back of the neck. Measure the amount that will be cut with your fingers. Once you have cut the first section of hair, use it as a length guide for remaining hair. Work your way up the back of the head to the front including the sides until you have reached the desired length.

    Cutting the Afro with Scissors

    • 1). Separate the Afro into three sections. Use a comb to separate the back and sides of the Afro into two different sections. Place a rubber band or hair band around each section to hold it in place. Take the remaining hair in the front and separate it into a third section and place a band around it.

    • 2). Distribute a liberal amount of coconut oil into each section, as this will allow the hair to brush easier without causing damage. Comb each section out until it is standing straight outward from the scalp.

    • 3). Pull the section straight between your fingertips. Allow the amount of hair you want to trim through your fingertips. Use the scissors to cut the appropriate length, and cut in a straight line to keep the hair from looking uneven. Continue this process for each section of the Afro.
