An EMT, or emergency medical technician, is a vital part of the community and saves numerous lives every day. Becoming an EMT can be costly, however, because of the expenses of tuition, application fees, text books, certification, and room and board. Financial aid can help cut down on the costs. From state EMT associations to private nonprofit charities, there are many grants available to EMT students. - Various state EMT associations across the country can provide you with grants and scholarships. Iowa grants $1,000 to students who want to become professional EMTs. To qualify, you must receive good grades and be registered and enrolled in an EMT program. Another qualifying factor is financial inability to afford such a degree. The Iowa EMT association will give first priority to those who need the money the most. New Hampshire's Rockingham Regional Ambulance Association gives different grant awards every year based on their budgetary limitations.
- The Boundtree Medical Legacy Scholarship is a bit more specific regarding applicant qualifications. The grant is available only to those registered in an EMT program, and is not available to any of the other types of EMS workers. Also, you must have a parent who currently works or has worked in the EMS field. This can include police officers, EMTs or firefighters. The grant has a $50, 000 budget that is distributed yearly. The application form is available on the Boundtree Medical Legacy Scholarship website.
- The National Association of EMTs allocates grants to specific EMT students. The association accepts applications twice a year from students. Grants are given to students who wish to continue careers as EMT professionals. You must be a member of the association to qualify. The association has three different types of grants: $2,500 for degree completion; $5,000 to become a paramedic; and $500 to cover the training and certification to become an EMT. There is an application on the association's website for you to fill out if you qualify.
- EMSGrantHelp.com has a long list of grants, and the information on this site is not just for students but for various state EMT departments.
