How to Hide an LCD TV
- 1). Purchase a DVD of art images or invest in an authentic oil painting on canvas. According to a 2005 Los Angeles Times, many decorators choose to use DVDs to play static or ever-changing photos of classic art on TVs. This creates the illusion that the TV is really a painting. Using a real canvas adds a more realistic look.
- 2). Mount your flat-screen TV on the wall with a wall-mounting bracket, available where most TVs are sold. For a bulky LCD, carve an inset into the wall that will hold the heft of the television and allow it to stick out no more than a typical framed painting.
- 3). Connect a DVD player to the TV and pop the art DVD in if you've chosen the option of creating an illusion. Fast-forward to the image you want to display. Alternately, you can choose a DVD that displays aquarium scenes, making the TV look like a real aquarium. Some people opt to burn a DVD of family images to display pictures or a slideshow on the TV, thus converting it to a large photo frame.
- 4). Hang the canvas art over the TV screen using a retractable mount if you've chosen the option of using a real painting. Retractable mounts will raise, lower or shift the painting sideways to reveal the TV when necessary. Some manufacturers create scrolling canvases specifically for hiding televisions, according to the Los Angeles Times.
- 1). Hang drapes over a wall-mounted TV. This will create the sense of an additional window in the room. Choose thick, floor-length window treatments for a more luxurious look, suggests Chicago Home and Garden magazine. Blinds or shades can be added underneath the curtains for a complete look.
- 2). Put the TV inside of an entertainment armoire or shelving system that has doors that close over the screen. Build a custom-fit shelving system for your TV if you cannot find one large enough in a furniture store. If a cabinet is not appealing, you can convert a sideboard with a flip top as a TV holder. The TV could sit inside the sideboard on a platform that will raise it via a remote control when needed for viewing.
- 3). Hang a special two-way mirror over the TV. Two-way mirrors can become transparent when lit from underneath by the television set. Family and guests will therefore be able to view the TV through the mirror. When the TV is off, the mirror resembles a typical mirror.
