Broken Wings is a must read as I discovered from the books beginning.
Pamela Wells recovered, rehabbed, fed, and did anything possible to allow her mostly smaller animals get to the point of living a near normal life.
She had a small home with some old surrounding buildings both of which she used for the animals, located in a very rural area of New Orleans.
Some lived with her in her house while some were in the other buildings or on the loose not wanting to leave Pamela.
She was in her 40's and not a well woman having Lupus.
Most days she was fine but those days when the disease reared up and bit her, she had to take it easy but that was not easy or possible with a very limited budget and only her good friend, Carol Corbin, to relieve her, take care of the books, and help with needed work.
Daniel Phillips drove down the dusty road leading to the "Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Center" sent by his probation officer to assist in cleaning cages or any such work needed as part of his agreement with the law.
Pamela was caught off guard not expecting Daniel or anyone to assist her center.
After some conversation she reluctantly agreed to allow Daniel to stay and help.
Pamela was divorced from her first husband, Bob, who was a real blowhard man thinking he was the best thing that had ever happened to Pamela or any other woman he met.
He was remarried now but still played around on that wife also.
Bob owned part of the nature center and he held that over Pamela thinking he could force her to do what he wanted all the time.
When Bob came around, he either wanted something from Pamela or he wanted to cause her trouble.
Daniel helped around the center, learning every day he was there.
He was a bartender in New Orleans but he started to like this assisting with the animals and his personal feelings towards Pamela were giving him a "love tickle" when he saw or thought of her.
Daniel was an Iraqi war veteran with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which he had been fighting for years.
As with Pamela, stress made each of their diseases rear up their ugly heads.
This was not a good situation with Bob around! The feelings of Daniel and Pamela became very evident and good old Bob knew it so he caused as much trouble as he could for both of them, including their private feelings for each other.
Bob wanted Pamela back in his life and proposed to her promising he would finance all her needs with the rehab center as well as her private life.
In order to accomplish this he had to drive a wedge between Daniel and Pamela, which he did every chance he could with them, all their friends, and business colleagues.
You will love this story.
The author has mixed love, animals, hate, medical problems, family problems, and so much more that makes Broken Wings a sensational story.
It also gives the reader an insight into what occurs in a rehab facility such as this one that Pamela runs.
The animals give her and the readers so much pleasure and many times, laughs.
