    Be the Contractor

    • Filling the role of general contractor involves a great deal of time and energy. Consider this option if you have a basic knowledge of the construction process and the time to devote to it. Evaluate the savings you will enjoy in comparison to the amount of time you'll need to invest before deciding to take on the general contractor responsibilities.

    Solidify Plans

    • The final housing plans should be made before construction begins. Changes after building begins add to the overall project cost. Structures already in place may have to be torn down and rebuilt to fit the new specifications. The time line of the project will likely suffer because the building efforts will be redirected to the new plans. Careful analysis of the plans before the crews begin pouring the foundation saves stress and money down the road.

    Upgrade Later

    • Consider selecting base models for items such as sinks and lighting fixtures when the house is initially built. Upgrading these items in the future is always a possibility, and you'll save money up front by choosing lesser options. Building a house that is the preferred size and layout is more important than lavish upgrades. Putting an addition on the house at a later date is much more involved and costly than upgrading countertops or flooring.

    Finishing

    • Complete some of the finishing work yourself to save on labor costs. Determine your level of expertise on projects such as painting, flooring, lighting fixtures and drywall installation before deciding on this option. Consider the skills of friends and family who may be willing to offer their services. Handling some or all of the finish work requires a time investment but will save a good amount of money. Taking care of the site cleanup is another way to save money.
