Orchid Lights

Light is a key factor when growing Orchids.
If you live in a location with very poor lighting (a small apartment or very northern location) or if you are growing one of the high light varieties of Orchids you may consider purchasing Orchid lights to enhance the health and flowering capability of your plant.
These lights are obviously designed for Orchids, but they are also effectively used on other tropical plants.
What makes Orchid lights different than your normal light bulb is that they are a very wide spectrum lighting source.
Engineers have designed these lights to simulate real sunlight as closely as possible.
The normal light bulb in your bathroom or on your front porch is normally a 75 or 100 watt narrow spectrum bulb.
If your Orchid has no other option than a regular light, then that is better than nothing but if you have the option, real Orchids lights are the best choice.
This might get a little technical, but when selecting Orchid lights, first identify the exact type of Orchid you have.
Not all Orchids are created equal and they all have different watering and lighting requirements.
This can get even more technical if you are growing two very different types of Orchids under one Orchid light.
Orchid lights are not cheap; you should be prepared to pay as much as $50 USD per bulb with a fixture and extra if you need a mount.
Knowing what you need is very important.
Most Orchids require lighting in the blue, red and far-red lighting spectrums (440, 660 and 740 nanometer range respectively).
Just because most Orchids require the same basic type of lighting, they don't all need it in the same intensity.
Your Vanda Orchid will need to be placed closer to the Orchid light than your Paph or most of your other Phals.
Most Orchids do perfectly fine without additional lighting especially in America.
Usually the problem is Orchids get too much light or direct sunlight.
There will more than likely come a time when your Orchid will need specialized and controllable extra lighting.
This will normally be leading into the fall growing season when they will need a bit more water, fertilizer and light.
These are all the things all plants need to grow.
For Orchids, this is the specific time of the year when they go into to overdrive and start making those beautiful flowers we love them for.
