What Do You Want? I Want to Be RICH!
You want to be rich you say? Don't we all.
But have you ever stopped and thought about why? Why do you want to be rich? Do you love the smell of money? Do you want to swim in it like Scrooge McDuck? Where did you get the idea you wanted to be rich? From very early on, we get it into our heads that money is "the dream".
So we grow up thinking, "Man, I want to be rich!" or "I want to be a millionaire".
Now I've been saying that last one since I was a kid, but a million dollars ($1,000,000) really isn't what it used to be.
When you consider the average house in Australia is almost half a million dollars ($500,000).
So you get a job and work and work and work, more hours than you should.
You become very stressed out, as a result your health and home life suffer, and in the end you're still just treading water, all the time thinking to yourself, "Man, If only I was rich".
Which brings me to my point, Why do you want to be rich? Too many people think they want to be rich, but never stop and ask themselves "Why?".
Thousands of people end up getting plenty of money, but many end up stressed about work, having poor health, fighting with spouses, and in the end realising that having the money isn't really the point at all.
It's not about the money, it's about what the money can give you.
"But whatever do you mean?" It's what having the money allows you to do.
Things like, own your own home, go on a holiday, buy a new car, be able to quit your job (that's a favourite), the list goes on and on if you really brainstorm it.
But this STILL isn't the point.
This is all just stuff, things, goals.
Why do you want these things at all? What it really comes down to is...
We all want freedom.
Freedom to spend our time the way we choose.
To spend it with whomever we choose, without having the stress of everyday life getting in the way.
"Ohhh! Now I get it.
" Now, stop and think if this statement holds true for you.
Then figure out what things (a debt-free home, a nice reliable car, time with your family, holidays on a beach in Asia) will allow you to do that.
Many people don't realise, that they may in fact be a lot closer to some of these things than they originally thought.
Have you ever stopped and calculated just how cheap a holiday to Asia can be? Gone are the days where a vacation costs $15,000.
You can now get most places in the world (return trip) for under $1,500, much less if you travel to neighbouring countries.
Jetstar has flights from Sydney to Phuket direct for only $380 one way.
And how about owning your own home free and clear.
Lets say you bought a house in Australia these days (about $500,000) with a bank mortgage.
Most people will take 25-30yr terms and even extend that further by refinancing.
But did you know, that by making additional payments of $1000 a month off the loan, you actually end up saving approx $350,000 in interest? Do you have any idea the difference $350,000 invested, pretty much anywhere, can have on your life? What about spending more time with your family? Many people work late hours to get more money so they can get free and spend more time with their family and see their kids.
But are those extra hours really worth the lost time? Why not think about going home at a normal hour now, and spending it with your family, instead of thinking that you need money to do it.
So...
stop and think, Why do you want to be rich? And see if you achieve some of those things you want without actually having to be "rich" to get them.
