How to Change a Starting Rope on a Craftsman Push Mower
- 1). Pull the string out of the recoil housing and cut the T-handle off of the rope with a utility knife if the T-handle is still attached to the rope.
- 2). Pull the hose from the bottom of the gas tank and drain the gas from the tank into a suitable container. Remove the bolts that hold the gas tank onto the motor then set the tank off to the side.
- 3). Remove the bolts that secure the recoil shroud over the recoil pulley. Set the shroud to the side to access the recoil pulley.
- 4). Examine the recoil pulley and look for a setscrew. If you see a setscrew on the pulley, turn it counterclockwise two or three turns to loosen it from the engine shaft then pull the recoil pulley off of the engine shaft. If you do not locate a setscrew, simply pull the pulley off of the shaft.
- 5). Pull the remaining portion of rope out of the hole on the bottom of the recoil pulley.
- 6). Tie a small knot into one end of the replacement rope. Thread the other end of the rope up through the hole in the pulley until the knot butts up against the bottom of the pulley.
- 7). Wrap the rope around the pulley until you have approximately 6 inches left unwrapped.
- 8). Slide the pulley onto the engine shaft and tighten the setscrew if necessary.
- 9). Thread the remaining rope though the eyelet hole on the shroud then reattach the shroud to the engine.

Slide the remaining end of the rope through the T-handle then tie a knot in the rope. Pull on the T-handle to lock the handle in place. - 11
Reattach the gas tank and slide the gas line back onto the inlet port on the bottom of the tank. Refill the tank with gas.
