Mobile Phone Safety for Kids

101 16
Mobile phones are very useful devises that allow you to keep in touch with people when you are out, however, they are also the common source for most street robberies and bullying through text messaging. It is therefore very important that you keep yourself safe when using your mobile phone and avoid being made to feel uncomfortable and upset.

If you are out alone, try not to use your mobile phone unless necessary. Keep it out of site. Make sure not to go to isolated areas and try not to draw attention to yourself by using your phone in public. Be discrete and aware of your surroundings and anyone acting suspiciously around you and don't leave your phone unattended, always keep it in your pocket or bag.

Only give your mobile number to friends and people you trust. Do not give out your number in chat rooms or to people you do not know. This will prevent and reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of bullying. Bullies often use mobile phones to make threatening calls or send unpleasant text messages. Children may use phones to bully others as it is often easier to disguise their identity and number, therefore difficult to trace. Make sure that you report any of these incidents to your parents, teachers or any other trusted adult. It is important not to suffer in silent and ask for support.

Use a pin code to lock your phone when not in use and keep the pin secret. If your mobile phone is lost or stolen, the pin will protect it from others making phone calls and will give you time to report and have it cancelled. Remember to be discrete and only use your phone in a safe place or if alone, only when necessary.
