How to Troubleshoot an AcomData HD500UHE5-7

    • 1). Try plugging the AcomData HD500UHE5-7's power cable into a different wall outlet. Because the external hard drive is not physically connected to the computer on the inside, it can't use the computer's power supply to operate. It needs to use the power generated in your home via the cable. If the wall outlet you're using has blown a fuse or has otherwise been disabled, the hard drive won't be able to turn on. Change wall outlets and attempt to use the drive again.

    • 2). Verify that the data transfer cable (either USB or FireWire, depending on whichever you're using) that connects the AcomData HD500UHE5-7 to the computer is connected securely to both devices. The plugs on each end of the cable should be connected to the appropriate inputs on each device. When inserted properly, you shouldn't be able to push the plug any farther into the input. If this cable is loose, the computer won't be able to recognize the hard drive.

    • 3). Format the drive. The AcomData HD500UHE5-7 comes without a file system installed so that it can be used on both Windows and Mac computers. This means, however, that you'll have to format the drive one time before it can be used. Connect the drive to the computer and open the "Computer" button in the Control Panel. Right-click the icon for the drive and click "Format." Click "Start" to install a file system onto the drive and try using it again.
