Cutting Length for Zoysia Grass
- Most varieties of zoysia grass look best when mowed 1/2 to 1 inch in height. Adjust the cutting length to 2 inches for grass growing in full sun and 2 1/2 inches for grass growing in shade.
- Some varieties have different cutting lengths. The Zoysia japonica variety needs to be cut at 2 to 3 inches. Cashmere zoysia grass needs to be cut at 1/2 inch.
- A lawn that receives regular watering and fertilization responds best to weekly cutting. A lawn that is not on a water or fertilization schedule requires cutting every 10 to 14 days.
- Zoysia grass possesses a high percentage of silica that makes the leaf blade stiff and a challenge to cut. Reel mowers produce a cleaner cut than rotary mowers. Keep the blades sharp to avoid tearing or bruising the leaf tissue.
