Drawing People Rules
The first point I would like to make about this subject is that drawing people in my mind is really about drawing figures, whole people, legs, arms and bodies as well as faces or heads.
I would not consider just faces on there own to be drawing people I think of them as portraits but to be honest the rules are the same for all drawings be it cars, bicycles, dogs or cats the same basic rules apply.
Doing drawings of people or rather drawing figures is just like every other type of drawing that you will ever attempt to do because as with all other drawing it is about getting the construction right, it is about getting everything in proportion to everything else.
What do I mean by getting the construction right and everything in proportion, this is a good question to ask because it is very important? All drawings are constructed by making simple corresponding marks that relate to each other and give an indication as to where everything should be in relation to everything else.
A basic construction drawing is usually just an outline or wire frame without having much detail and giving a basic shape of each component, it is a basic map and carrying out this task could be thought of as a mapping exercise.
While you are carrying out this mapping exercise you will be learning/recording and it will be informing you of where everything is in relation to everything else.
In the case of drawing a figure it would be, the head, body, arms, hands, legs and feet these are the main components that make up a human figure.
These basic shapes or components would all need to be the right shape and size to be in proportion to each other.
Let's just say that I draw one leg longer than the other then it will be out of proportion or rather both legs will be out of proportion to each other because both legs will be normally seen in relation to each other as being the same size.
Not only are they in or out of proportion with each other but they will also be in or out of proportion to the arms, the hands, the legs, the feet, the torso and the head where they all of them need to be in proportion to each other to look normal or correct.
You will be preparing yourself for other tasks ahead.
I am not telling you that you must carry out these tasks these are what you will be doing instinctively if you make construction drawings.
There is more to drawing people than meets the eye so to speak and there are many more drawing people rules that just these.
