A blog or weblog is simply an online diary that originated with people using it for a creative practice while also allowing others to leave comments on your topics at the same time.
Blogging certainly isn't hard, but blogging interestingly enough to attract readers and returning readers certainly is.
There are two things to consider before you trek into the blogosphere..
..
Finding a space to publish your blog...
There are many blogging sites out there right now, the most famous and free is blogger.
com owned by Google.
Subscribing a blog is easy and you are usually allowed to upload images, embed YouTube videos (more on this later) and blogging sites usually provide you with tools to "beautify" and customize your blogs.
Finding a topic to blog about...
You need to think up a theme on which you can blog about.
Avoid the urge to blog about things too general as this will sometimes cause the readers to lose interest, that is unless you are some kind of celebrity writing to your fans.
A blog with a centralized theme with be well received and you are also assured of attracting the right audience to your blog.
While writing a blog is not an exact science but there are certain rules and guidelines you can follow to improve your blogging experience.
Below are just some blogging tips which I learnt and I hope you too can benefit from my experience.
  • Keeping it natural
Your blog is a way of conveying your ideas and opinions.
Try not to write it in too formal a manner like you are writing a report or it may turn readers off.
One thing I found was that readers love a conversational style of writing.
  • Captivating Headlines
Headlines may be one of the most important components in your blog posts.
This is because an eye catching headline relevant to the topic will immediately capture the attention of the readers and make them want to find out more by reading the body of the post.
A mundane headline on the other hand has the opposite effect.
You can check out the top newspapers to see how they do their headlines.
  • Keeping your entries simple and concise
Get your point across in an interesting but concise manner.
If you have a long entry, break up the text with paragraphs.
Using images that is relevant to what you are talking about is always a good idea.
Take note to edit the image's size so that it fits well into the general layout of your blog.
Too much droning makes your blog boring.
Also remember that you are publishing to the entire world.
Some slang, expressions, acronyms may not be understood by people from other countries.
So, it is important to either keep to internationally accepted expressions, or if you have to use a slang/acronym, take the time to explain what you mean in brackets next to it.
  • Staying on Topic
While I had previously mentioned that you should blog interestingly, I have to warn you of the risk of "drifting" or moving off topic.
Sometimes we get all caught up and get sidetracked to another topic, although eventually we get back on track, this sidetracking may leave a bad taste in your readers' mouth.
  • Being Informative
As mentioned previously, there is a need to add value to your blog, so that your readers actually find they learn something new.
If you are going to offer links, give more information about them instead of just putting them up.
Give each link or group of links a little paragraph of information to catch the reader's interest.
  • Blogging often
Many bloggers lack the discipline to blog often.
Stick to a schedule.
If you are comfortable with blogging everyday, then make it a habit to do so by working it into your daily schedule.
If you blog once a week, that's fine too, just make sure it is on a regular basis, like on every Friday.
That way, your loyal readers will also know when to expect the next update and when to check back.
A frequently updated blog will also mean the search engines will spider the pages at regular intervals.
  • Keyword and relevance
Search engines look for relevance to a topic and density of keywords.
If you blog with a lot of relevancy to your main theme of your website and include a lot of keywords at the same time, you can be sure to boost your blog's visibility or ranking in a search.
Think like your readers and what kind of keywords they would likely use and use them appropriately in your headlines and body text.
  • Preparing your blogs in Word document/notepad
Personally, I would recommend that you type the text into a Word document first then transfer over to the blog.
That way, you can work offline and at the same time use the Word tools such as spell check and word count.
Spell checking your text especially is very important.
It does not take too long to do this and it can save you the embarrassment later.
Transferring over to the blog from the document also gives you the flexibility to edit and change the arrangement of images, links, and video to achieve the best possible flow.
  • Maintaining a Writing Style
Every successful blogger has his/her own style.
Search for the typing style you are most comfortable with and stick with it.
This way, your readers can know what to expect and build a sense of closeness to your blog.
  • Proof Reading
I always like to read and re-read my offline and online copies of any document, blog entry I wrote.
You can then trim away stuff you do not need, check for continuity and flow and spelling errors before pasting it into your blog.
Put yourself in your readers' shoes, is what you blogged something that would interest you and your readers in general?
  • The Aesthetics
It would be a shame if no one reads your blog not because it does not have good information but because of just the way it is presented.
The layout of your blog should be pleasant to the eye and the colors should not be contradicting.
For example, do NOT use red text on a blue background or dark text on a dark background on your blog.
Those really chase the visitors away even before the blog page is done loading! Use indenting and paragraphing appropriately to make your blog readable.
Use bullet lists in your blog wherever possible because they are the easiest to read.
If you have always wanted to be successful in writing a blog, I hope the above tips on blog writing are helpful.
Writing a blog can be a very fun and fulfilling experience if you know how to do it right.
