A type of alopecia which affects males is termed as alopecia barbae. Alopecia is not a single condition, but in reality there are eleven different types of alopecia which includes Traction Alopecia, Telogen Alopecia, Scarring Alopecia, Anagen Effluvium, Alopecia Universalis, Alopecia Totalis, Alopecia Mucinosa, Alopecia Barbae and Alopecia Areata. Alopecia barbae features with hairless, small and round patches on the beard. Unlike, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia barbae is detected on the beard and it only affects men.

There are some males who have reported some burning sensation onto the affected skin, although there is no pain incurred due to hair loss. There are no specific causes unfortunately identified for Alopecia barbae. There are certain scientific studies which state that Alopecia barbae can be auto-immune disorder. Due to this disorder, for the destroying of the foreign bodies, immune system sends white blood cells to attack the hair follicles. In the follicles enzymes and chemical are released which lets the breakdown of the present cells in the follicles along with disrupting the hair growth. Another cause of Alopecia is genetic, particularly androgenetic Alopecia.

The males in your family or your parent have suffered from baldness, then the tendency of alopecia barbae is probably inherited. Apart, from the above mentioned causes medications, stress and environmental factors such as ageing, illness can also cause Alopecia. Most males try to ignore the patches if they are small. If the patches are big, then it may significantly affect the appearance of the beard.
