There are a number of scholarships that are available to assist students pursuing studies in art and photography to pay for college. Many of these are available from private endowments or associations that honor the memory of artists and photographers that have died. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of not only academic achievement, but also the quality of the applicant's submitted art and photos. - The San Francisco Foundation provides a number of scholarship awards to art and photography students with a connection to the state of California. The James D. Phelan Art Awards are open to all artists who were born in California and offer prizes of $5,000 in categories of film, photography, printmaking and video. The San Francisco Foundation also offers a number of fellowships to art students who are pursuing postgraduate studies at any of several art colleges in the state of California. sff.org - The John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund for Art Education provides scholarship money to art students in the amount of $5,000. The funds are normally disbursed in four equal amounts over the course of a year. In order to be eligible, a student must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and must be committed to making art in accordance with Western classical tradition. nationalcowboymuseum.org - The Alfred G. and Elma M. Milotte Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to photography and art students living in the state of Washington. These one-time scholarships are awarded in amounts of up to $4,000. In order to be eligible, a student must have lived in Washington state for at least five years prior to applying and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. According to the Milotte Scholarship Fund website, a student is eligible if he is a careful observer of nature that has expressed those observations "in an artistic way that engages the everyday person." This may be in images, song, words or modern technology. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.
