Bird Seed Wreath Recipes
- Start by making a base for your birdseed wreath out of corrugated cardboard; the side of a large packing box works well. Create a wreath shape or any other shape, such as a heart, out of the cardboard, and cut it out. Cut a piece of wire (about 2 feet long), to be used later for hanging the birdseed wreath in a tree.
- Prepare a packet of clear gelatin as per the package directions, in a large pot. Remove the pot from the stove, add 2 quarts of packaged birdseed and then mix well. When the sticky mixture is cool to the touch, mold it around the wreath base. Let the wreath harden and cool completely, two to three hours. Hang the wreath outdoors by attaching the wire to the wreath and a tree branch.
- A peanut butter recipe can be made into a wreath, using the same base as described earlier, or the mixture can be spread onto pine cones, which can be hung outside. Start by heating 3 cups of peanut butter in the microwave until it is soft and creamy. Mix in 1 cup of cornmeal. Spread the peanut butter mixture over one side of the wreath base. Press birdseed onto the wreath until it is completely covered. Gently turn the wreath over and repeat the process. Let the wreath sit in a cool place for about an hour before hanging outdoors.
- Heat 1 cup of suet (beef fat from the butcher) or lard in a large pot, over low heat, until melted. Remove the pot from the stove and add 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 3 cups of cornmeal and 1 cup commercial birdseed. Also, add a 1-cup mixture of any of the following: hulled peanuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds or raisins. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Let it cool enough to handle, and then mold it onto the cardboard base. Let the birdseed suet wreath cool completely before hanging on a tree branch.
