What Is Super Sod?
- The Patten Seed Company, Super Sod's parent company, began by producing, harvesting and processing centipede grass seed. Before this point, only sprigging or sodding would grow centipede grass. The seed was sold under the name Centi-Seed and was developed by Dr. Wayne Hanna at Tifton, Georgia's Coastal Plains Experiment Station. The company also developed hybrid Bermuda grasses for golf courses, athletic courses and lawns. Patten Seeds also maintained golf courses in the Bahamas and the Atlanta area. The company's dark-green, medium-textured Super Sod Zoysia grass has been laid in places like EPCOT center at Disney World.
- Super Sod's product line varies depending on location. Generally, it sells Bermuda, centipede, fescue, St. Augustine and zoysia sods. Bermuda grasses have their origins in Africa, spreading through America during the colonial era. This warm-season sod thrives in warm weather. Centipede is a newer grass in the states, brought from China in 1919. It has a pale-medium green color and medium texture. It works well for a dense, weed-free lawn. Tall fescue grass offers a cool season option with dark green blades adapted to cooler Southern states. St. Augustine remains a favorite in the lower Atlantic and Gulf coasts and is a native seashore grass.
- The company's website offers a variety of information on its products and services with pricing on sod, seeds, trees, shrubs, fertilizers and specialty items. Its Encyclopedia of Lawn grasses provides in-depth, comprehensive information on seedbed preparation and planting, sod preparation, application and care, details on grass species and frequently asked questions regarding lawn and garden care, store locations and company information.
- Super Sod provides an array of other products, including trees, shrubs, fertilizers and seeds. Super Sod's website has a turf grass selector tool for the consumer searching for grasses appropriate for his climate, uses, water requirements, shade tolerance and maintenance level. Results are displayed with a match percentage rate on a scale of 100. Result details include an overview of USDA zone information as well as turf grass basics.
