The Patten Seed Company

• The Patten Seed Company, Super Sod's parent company, began by producing, harvesting and processing centipede grass seed. Before this point, only sprigging or sodding would grow centipede grass. The seed was sold under the name Centi-Seed and was developed by Dr. Wayne Hanna at Tifton, Georgia's Coastal Plains Experiment Station. The company also developed hybrid Bermuda grasses for golf courses, athletic courses and lawns. Patten Seeds also maintained golf courses in the Bahamas and the Atlanta area. The company's dark-green, medium-textured Super Sod Zoysia grass has been laid in places like EPCOT center at Disney World.
  
  

Types of Sod Available

• Super Sod's product line varies depending on location. Generally, it sells Bermuda, centipede, fescue, St. Augustine and zoysia sods. Bermuda grasses have their origins in Africa, spreading through America during the colonial era. This warm-season sod thrives in warm weather. Centipede is a newer grass in the states, brought from China in 1919. It has a pale-medium green color and medium texture. It works well for a dense, weed-free lawn. Tall fescue grass offers a cool season option with dark green blades adapted to cooler Southern states.
