How to Troubleshoot the Power Steering in a Ford
- 1). Start your Ford's engine and open the hood.
- 2). Have an assistant turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you check the function of the power steering system. Look at the power steering reservoir tank located on the firewall. The power steering reservoir tank will have a cap labeled "power steering fluid". If, while turning the steering wheel, you see any leaks coming from the power steering reservoir area, then you will need to replace this item.
- 3). Listen for a "whine", "swoosh", or rubbing sound coming from the power steering pump assembly. Many Ford models have had factory recalls on the pitman arm of the power steering assembly. This problem may manifest itself as a "whine", a "swooshing" sound, or a rubbing sound while you are turning the steering wheel. This component needs to be replaced.
- 4). Check for leaks underneath the vehicle. Power steering fluid is red in color, so if you are leaking red fluid underneath your Ford towards the front of the engine bay, then you likely have a power steering line that is leaking. The lines need to be serviced by a professional mechanic. In some cases, these lines can be repaired. However, if the damage is severe, the lines will have to be replaced.
