How to Neuter Crab Apple Trees

    • 1). Choose an optimal time. Pick a windless, rain-free day when temperatures are between 65 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Watch your crabapple’s flowering, too. Spray halfway through or toward the end of flowering, before fruit begins to set, for the best chance of success. Spray again five to seven days later if you’re using carbaryl.

    • 2). Assemble equipment and supplies. Put on protective clothing, safety goggles and rubber gloves. Follow product directions to mix the exact quantity of PGR or carbaryl solution that you’ll need. Prepare the spray only on the day you’ll be using it--not even the night before.

    • 3). Spray your crabapple carefully and thoroughly, climbing the ladder to reach the crown and inner branches. Follow all product safety instructions. Make sure no spray drifts to other plants or trees.

    • 4). Clean your sprayer and other equipment, following all product instructions. Take a shower and clean up. Launder work clothes before wearing them again.
