Tennessee Forestry Association Grants
- While Tennessee may be known for forests such as the one in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 80 percent of the state's forests are privately owned.lone tree amid smoky mountains image by Jorge Moro from Fotolia.com
Originally known as "Keep Tennessee Green," the Tennessee Forestry Association advocates comprehension and preservation of the state's forest system. Its membership includes foresters, landowners, loggers, sawmills and trucking companies; grants available through TFA reflect this wide assortment of forestry interests. The grants present environmental education opportunities and encourage sustainable forestry practices. - The Tennessee Forestry Association co-sponsors a master logger program. After completing a five-day training session, participants earn a master logger certificate, card, cap and manual. Graduates' names are added to a database for referrals to landowners and industry representatives. Master loggers are required to attend periodic continuing education classes to retain master logger status. The Forest Resource Association, Inc., hailed the program as one of the top three logger education programs in the country.

The Tennessee Tree Farm Program helps private landowners learn about the history and health of their forests and set management goals and practices. It also helps landowners enhance and maintain wildlife habitats and protect watersheds. Landowners who own 10 or more forested acres can become certified tree farmers. Certified tree farms are eligible to receive a Tree Farm certificate and sign, a subscription to "Tree Farmer" magazine and inclusion in area Tree Farm events. Typical Tree Farm events include dinners and field days.
