Video: Which Is Better for the iPad: PDF or ePub?
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Skylar. The question came up which is better for iPad, ePub or PDF. I prefer ePub. It comes down to the user experience and let me show you why. If you've only got iBooks on your iPad, then you can read either format. Let me show you what they look like. First we'll start with PDF so we'll go to collections, PDFs and open up this one, IOS Security. First of all what you'll notice is that it does not fill the page but if I zoom, it does. PDFs are images, collections of images that's really literally what they are. So I can see all the pages down here and I can quickly scroll through them but if I zoom in, I can't necessarily interact with the text in the same way that I would so I can select that text and I can copy it or I could search for it so if I highlight this word, I can define, there are some things that I can do. Now watch what happens when I open up the ePub, go to my books and open up this document. So this is a novel, there it is. Right now I've got my, I've got iBooks to display in scroll mode so it's just a very very long scroll the whole book. This is noticeably different from working with PDF. If I want to, I can very easily control the size of the font and what's important to me is that I can annotate the text. So if I rest my finger on a word and highlight this paragraph, you'll see that I have many more options than I did in the PDF, for example, highlighting. So I'll tap highlight. I don't really want to underline it, I want to make it blue and I'd also like to annotate the text by adding a note, great. Now if I tap my table of contents, tap notes, I can see all of the things that I've highlighted and annotated during the course of my reading. I feel like that's a valuable tool. I can also make bookmarks which I can see in my table of contents. Plus, ePubs can be downloaded from any source. It's a pretty universal format. That said, for reading longer words, I much prefer ePub, it reduces the amount of time you have to interact with the screen. Thanks for watching. I'm Skylar.
