Tips on Moving Into a New House

Moving into a new house is an exciting but daunting task. There is quite a lot of work involved in a house move, and it is almost a certainty that something will go wrong on the big day---you will have packed the kettle or coffee maker at the bottom of the last box and you will be unable to make a drink, for example. Fear not: The key to a seamless move is preparation and organization. The more you can do in advance of the move, the easier it will be. - It is a good idea to have a few lists---though not too many. Write a list of the utility companies you need to inform and the amount of notice you need to give to have services connected to your new home 24 hours before you move in. Make sure your bank and other financial services know your new address. You do not want a time lapse between your old home and your new.
- Spend some time in your new area before you move in. Locate as many local services, such as doctors, libraries and dentists, as possible. Make sure your new home is secure. Make a list or a plan of what you need. If possible, do any painting or floor work before you move in your furniture.
- This is the time for some serious decluttering. Begin as far ahead of the move as possible. Take unwanted items to a charity shop, or hold a garage sale. Measure curtains, rugs and carpets and make a decision about what you are going to be able to take to the new home. Wardrobe boxes and other useful packing paraphernalia can be bought from U-haul or other moving stores. You may decide to employ a professional moving firm or do it yourself with the help of family and friends. It is worth checking the prices of local moving firms.
- Pack each room's contents into a separate box or carton, then clearly label it. Wrap breakables carefully, and consider making a separate trip to move those things that are particularly precious. Check to see if your move is covered by your household insurance or whether the removal firm (if you are using one) includes insurance in its price.
