Neurofeedback For Depression
Rollo May, an extensional psychologist, summed up depression perfectly when he said, "Depression is the inability to construct a future".
For many people that will mean their day to day life will be spent in the depths of despair with little hope of ever recovering.
For the 25 years that I have been counseling in Orange County, CA, depression is the most frequent diagnosis that I see.
My friends who are counselors tell me the same thing.
The raw reality is that people who suffer from depression and illnesses that can lead to depression can spend all their lives looking for a "cure" and instead will end up living their lives in misery.
Perhaps the best way to illustrate this point is by showing you some staggering statistics about depression.
The first is the most eye opening because for the people who are under the weight of depression the idea of hope of recovery is one of the most important things for them to hang on to and seek out.
The fact is that up to 2% of those who are clinically depressed will die by suicide this year.
Think that is a staggering statistic, now consider that the 8th leading cause of death in 1997 was suicide.
The total number that year? 30,535 people died by their own hand, because they had a state of mind that left them without options and without any recourse.
Neurofeedback could have helped those 30,535 people not only survive their depression it could have given them their life back.
Imagine a person on the verge of suicide being able to regain control of their mind and their life, becoming a positive addition to society and even more important their families.
Now consider that the suicide rate among young people has increased significantly in the last few decades.
Suicide was the 3rd leading cause of death in 15-24 year olds in 1997.
The third leading cause of death!! What is truly astounding is how well these young people could be doing if they were taught the simple formula to give them access to their true potential.
Instead of being overcome with their despair they could use their brains in the way it was intended to improve their life and relationships.
Neurofeedback can give these young people, well ALL people the balance they need to save their life.
Clearly, depression is a very serious issue.
Unfortunately, for many years, men, women and children around the world were hesitant to seek treatment, fearing that the stigma of psychiatric treatment would only add to their list of troubles.
In 1972, Senator Thomas Eagleton's admission of having been treated for depression cost him the candidacy for Vice President.
Happily, many things have changed since 1972.
Depression is no longer the "scarlet letter" of healthcare, and EEG biofeedback, or neurofeedback has proven to be incredibly effective this condition.
Now, please keep in mind one very important thing; one of the most exciting things about neurofeedback for depression (other than the fact it works so well for many people) is that it is free of the burdensome side effects of some of the other treatments available.
No drug induced sickness and no side effects! Neurofeedback can give depression suffers a new lease on life.
