How to Prepare for a Bartender Interview: Terminology
- 1). Study a reliable list of bartending terminology daily, such as the one listed in Resource 1. The more often you expose yourself to these terms, the better you will understand and remember them.
- 2). Read and reread drink recipes. Not only will this practice help you learn drink recipes by heart, but you will become more and more familiar with bartending terms. Look up any terms you come across that you are unfamiliar with and write them down. Review those unfamiliar words until you understand them.
- 3). Read unfamiliar terms and their definitions out loud and write out the definitions of the bartending terms repetitively. Your memory of bartending terms will be more well-rounded if you utilize other senses such as touch and hearing.
- 4). Play games or make up tests to help you learn the terms. For example, make flashcards with a term on one side and the definition on the other. Have a friend quiz you and eat an M&M every time you get the right answer. Have a friend use a crossword generator to make up a puzzle with the bartending terms you need to know.
- 5). Talk to other bartenders or bartending students about the job and drink recipes. You will have to utilize and understand bartending terminology in conversation, which will help you learn new and unfamiliar terms and practice the terms you know.
