Pacific Grove, CA Make Sure Your Caregiver Is Licensed, Bonded & Insured: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California

At Family inHome Caregiving, our biggest competitor is not other private duty companies but rogue caregivers working under the table. The client can typically pay them less, but doing so is fraught with risk. These caregivers are not bonded or insured, and there is no guarantee that they have been properly trained or don't have a criminal background. Hiring a caregiver through a company often seems expensive but that's due to the fact that there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes on that the clients don't see. References are called on caregivers, multiple background checks are done, we have back-up plans if someone doesn't show up for work, as well as an ongoing training program. If you hire someone under the table, you are at risk of being sued for an on the job injury, you are liable for payroll taxes, and there's always the risk that a caregiver will steal from you. I was disturbed to read an article in Bloomberg Businessweek about a start-up company which is charging those looking for a caregiver a fee of $50/month to look at their database of home care workers. If they choose one, they pay a fee of 10% of the person's wages and they are allowed to piggy-back on the company's liability insurance and also get a one-time criminal background check done. Although that's better than hiring someone under the table, that doesn't resolve a number of issues like getting a dishonesty bond and having the risk of someone having a workers compensation claim against you which might not be covered by the liability insurance. There's also the issue of not having a back-up plan if the person calls in sick. All of these headaches can be resolved by hiring someone through an agency like Family inHome Caregiving. With all of the horror stories I read in the paper about elder abuse, particularly financial elder abuse, I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
