How to Create Free Ebooks Software

    • 1). Choose a format that you want to create eBooks in. If you are searching for freeware products, you will have to compile each format one at a time. Programs that can compile multiple eBook formats are usually paid only, and even then, you may be better off with the freeware. Mobipocket Creator is a good example of this. Common and cross-platform formats include Adobe PDF, HTML and TXT. Most major eBook retailers also carry Microsoft LIT and Mobipocket PRC formats. The more formats you can offer, the more readers will be able to pick up your books.

    • 2). Once you've chosen a format, you will need to find an eBook program for it. If you've chosen Adobe PDF and go through its site, you can make five eBooks for free, but if you want to make more than that, you will have to use a different program. CS Suite is pricey, but both Cute PDF and PrimoPDF offer freeware versions of their software that users can create eBooks with. They do this by taking your formatted Microsoft Word document and generating a PDF via the print command.

    • 3). The only free software that will create a Mobipocket file is Mobipocket Creator. You can download it at mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsCreator.asp. Creator will create PRC files from HTML, TXT, Microsoft Word docs and Adobe PDF. Be aware that you will probably get the cleanest looking eBook from HTML and TXT files. Creator will allow you to add the file of your choice and then add cover art and create a table of contents.

    • 4). Microsoft LIT files can be created via an add-in in Microsoft Word, or you can use ReaderWorks Standard to generate the files. However, you will still have to start with a .doc file in order to create the LIT in either program.

    • 5). HTML files are cross platform and nearly all eBook readers support them. You can save HTML in Microsoft Word if you already have it installed on your computer. If not, Open Office's Writer is a free download, and you can use it to create HTML files. You will have to choose the format from its "Save As" option. Finally, TXT files are ubiquitous, cross platform and easy to make. Go to "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and then choose "Notepad." If you're on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can do a search for Notepad and it will pop up. Enter your eBook's text and save. Now you have eBooks that are ready to upload.
