    • 1). Read a book about volleyball or speak to someone who plays to learn all the rules about the game. Your coach will take notice that you know what is and isn't allowed in the game. If you're trying out for the varsity squad, it's especially important to know the basic rules because your coach isn't going to want to spend time going over the most basic information.

    • 2). Bump the ball against the side of a building. Bumping is the most basic skill to master in volleyball. Lock your fingers together and bend your knuckles to form a fist. Get under the ball to bump it to another teammate or over the net.

    • 3). Work on running. Speed is essential to playing successful volleyball since you need to get to the ball before it hits the ground. Your coach may also require you to run a set distance or for an extended length of time. Purchase running shoes with adequate arch support and alternate walking and running at home if running tires you out quickly. This will increase your endurance.

    • 4). Open yourself up to criticism. Your coach not only wants to evaluate your skills but also see how well you take direction and act as a team player. Don't get upset if you receive suggestions about how to improve your performance. You also should implement the strategies in your future game play to show your coach that you are listening and want to improve.

    • 5). Talk to a friend who is also trying out to arrange a time to practice together. Even without a net you two can bump the ball back and forth and even focus on setting and spiking. Watch for areas you each need to work on and play to your strengths.
