I got fired. What to do now?

This can happen to anyone. You are sitting on your desk and then you are informed via an email or the manager calls you in for a meeting telling you that for some reason they are forced to let you go. The reason could be anything, your work is not needed anymore or the company is downsizing etc. Even the permanent employees might have to face this situation sometime. And when you are working on jobs in Pakistan, this can happen to almost anyone from the bottom up.

So now you have got the news, what should you do next. Here are some things that you should take into consideration.

Accept it – The first thing is that you should accept it that you have been let go. I have seen many people who have been fired from their jobs in Pakistan and they deny the bad news. Yes you can ask the reason or check your previous performance to make sure you were on the right track, but it is unlikely that the decision will be reconsidered.

Do not fight back to keep the job – Many people try to fight back to keep their jobs in Pakistan. I would not recommend this strategy as it is not always successful. Very little people have won this fight, only those who were indispensable to the organization and were wrongly fired. Otherwise a large number of people will end up humiliating themselves fighting the management. The decisions that the higher management makes are mostly final and irrevocable. So it is better to move on.

Make a plan – Now that you have accepted the fate, it is time to make a plan for the future. How do you want to spend the next few weeks or may be a couple of months. How much money do you have to get by during these times? Start connecting with your contacts in the professional field and tell them about your availability. Jobs in Pakistan are usually available on online job portals. Start creating an impressive and up to date resume with all details of your latest job and projects.

Revisit strengths and weaknesses – When you accept the decision made by the management, it gets easier for you to revisit your strengths and weaknesses. Try to eliminate your weaknesses and improve your strong areas. Take up short courses and diplomas in order to utilize your free time as it is a great way to improve your professional experience.

Do not burn bridges – You never know when your company realizes that it was actually you who they need. This happens a lot of the time and I would advise not to burn bridges when you leave a company. It would be hard to smile, but give the manager a smile which should remain on your face when you clear your desk.
