How to Change a Smooth Treadmill Belt
- 1). Purchase your replacement treadmill belt from the manufacturer of your treadmill. This is important, because using the wrong treadmill belt can cause damage to your machine, malfunction and cause injury or void your warranty.
- 2). Disconnect the treadmill from its power source. This will ensure that there is no power to it, and will decrease your risk of electric shock or mechanical injury.
- 3). Remove the safety covers from the foot rails. These rails are located on either side of the treadmill belt and usually have some type of safety traction on them in case you need to stop suddenly. Most of these simply pop off, but you may need to use a screwdriver if it is secured by screws.
- 4). Remove the cover from the front motor. This cover will be towards the front of the treadmill on top of where the treadmill belt comes out. You will need to remove screws before the cover can be removed.
- 5). Remove the rollers carefully. This process may vary slightly depending on the model of treadmill that you have, but the process will involve lifting the rollers out of place to decrease the belt tension. Once you have gotten rid of the belt tension, you will be able to easily slide the rollers out from the belt horizontally.
- 6). Slide the old treadmill belt out of the machine carefully.
- 7). Slide the new treadmill belt onto the machine, using the same general method as you did during the removal, only in the opposite direction. Be sure to replace the rollers so that the new belt is held in place.
- 8). Replace the motor cover back on the treadmill, and ensure that it is fastened securely.
- 9). Replace the side rails and ensure that they are properly secured.

Adjust the treadmill tension. This can usually be accomplished with a screwdriver and the screws on the back of the treadmill. Some treadmills have automatic tension adjustment, so be sure to read your owner's manual prior to adjusting tension.
