Talking to my friends has made me realise that many women are still searching for that elusive secret to easy weight loss. I'm absolutely amazed by the number of women starving themselves half to death and trying the latest fad diet in a desperate attempt to shed the pounds. Well I can exclusively reveal here today.....there is no secret.

The key to successful weight-loss is to make small changes to your lifestyle, changes that you will be happy to stick with, rather than something you'll put up with for a couple of weeks and then give up. You need to treat weight-loss like a marathon, not a sprint. The important thing to note is that if you lose weight slowly, you're far more likely to be successful in keeping it off in the long term. That's why people who crash diet end up putting the weight back on, because the start a programme of eating that they simply cannot commit to in the long term. Hence, one they return to their old eating patterns, they pile the weight on again. To be successful, you only need to lose a couple of pounds a week. So what do you need to do then in order to be successful? Here's a few ideas to get you started.

Eat more complex carbohydrates such as whole grain cereals and bread and cut out things like white bread, cakes, fizzy pop and sweets. Eat more fruits and vegetables into your diet to maximize your fibre and vitamin intake. If you like meat, make sure you by lean meat. Also try to eat more white meat and fish.

Never skip meals as this will just leave you feeling hungry and you'll then be tempted to eat anything to stop the hunger cravings. Eat smaller meals but more of them and this will keep your sugar levels constant. If you need a snack be sure it's a health one such as a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts.

Make sure you get enough sleep. Research shows that those people who get a good night's sleep invariably weigh less than those who don't and they are less likely to feel hungry.

Everyone thinks losing weight is one of the toughest things you'll ever do, but trust me it doesn't have to be that way. If you make it tough you are more likely to fail. Start by making small changes and you'll be amazed by the results and how much better you feel. Remember though patience is the key, you're aiming to lose a couple of pounds a week at the most. Any more than that and you'll find it more difficult to keep the weight off.
