Keep Your Eye on Your Goal, do the Hard Work and Succeed
When I was a freshman in high school, I went out for the swim team. After my first workout, I realized, I was one of the better swimmers at Del Valle High School. My coach, wanted me to swim JV, but I wanted to swim varsity, because I wanted that Varsity Letter. Only one guy in the history of the school ever won a Varsity letter as a freshman and I wanted to join that elite club.
I convinced the coach that I could do it and he decided to put me in the 200 freestyle. I came in a miserable 4th place and didnt get any points towards that letter. It was after that, that I had my first lesson in niche marketing. No one wanted to swim the 100 butterfly, because it was such a killer event. I volunteered and was given another chance.
When the butterfly heat was a couple of events away, I was so nervous I went into the bathroom and threw up. The weather was rainy and cold as I stepped up on the blocks. When I hit the water and started swimming, no one could keep up with me. When I hit the halfway point, I was dying, but somehow got my arms out of the water and limped home in first place. I now had a way to achieve my goal. I hated that event, but it eventually gave me enough points for that Varsity Letter.
I didnt sleep for a week before the awards banquet because awarding a Varsity Letter to a freshman was controversial. At the banquet, I was physically sick, worrying that I wouldnt get that letter. When my name was called, it was like I was in a dream world.
Whenever I had goals in college or in my business, I would always draw on that experience and do the hard work to reach my goal. I built a business from ground zero to a multimillion dollar business by doing the hard work my competitors wouldnt do.
They went out of business and I survived and won!!
