How to Prevent Mildew in a Shower Ceiling
- 1). Keep your ceiling exhaust fan in good working condition. If your bathroom doesn't have a ceiling fan, install a fan as soon as possible, as a fan is the best way to prevent mildew from growing on the shower ceiling. Turn on the exhaust fan every time you take a bath or shower, and allow the fan to run for 15 to 20 minutes after you leave the shower to be sure the air is dry.
- 2). Open the bathroom door as soon as possible after taking a shower. If your bathroom has a window, leave it open as often as possible.
- 3). Allow your shower to drain completely. Remove any clogs in your drain. Use a chemical drain opener, if necessary. Apply the drain opener according to the directions on the container.
- 4). Keep the tile and grout in your shower and bathroom clean and apply a tile sealer, if necessary. Clean the bathroom walls and paint them with a semi-gloss paint, which provides a hard surface that makes it more difficult for mildew to grow.
- 5). Spray your shower ceiling and walls with a solution of half water and half hydrogen peroxide. The solution will prevent the formation of mold and mildew. If your shower ceiling already has the beginning of mildew, spray the ceiling a second time after two hours, and a third time the following morning. Repeat every time you clean your bathroom, or any time you notice mildew.
- 6). Repair any leaky faucets immediately. Be sure that bathroom lights and other fixtures are in good condition with no leaks.
- 7). Pull your shower curtain closed after each use to allow the curtains to dry. Launder your shower curtain regularly. Use hot water and add a cup of vinegar to the wash cycle. If your shower has doors, clean the doors regularly.
