Often when I post articles about do it yourself wood finishes or cleaning, readers ask me how do I get rid of vinegar smell or the smell of rancid vegetable oil. To start off, I'd like to say that these are odours that you shouldn't fret about. Vinegar smell eventually goes away, leaving doors and windows open will do the trick just as well. As for oils going rancid, that happens to some while others never experience it. Many people claim that they regularly clean wood that has been covered with vegetable oil and never experience a rancid smell. If you want to completely avoid this issue, just use coconut, walnut or linseed oil, which can't go rancid on wood. And if the smell of vinegar is the only thing keeping you from trying all of the fabulous organic cleaning solutions, here's how to make them a lot more bearable.

1. Scented Vinegar Solution
Many people shy away from making their own cleaning supplies solely because of their strong dislike of the vinegar stench. Good news, you can now make your own upgraded scented vinegar. Adding herbs of your choice, fresh or dried is one way. Another way is adding citrus peels! Not only will your cleaning supplies be organic, but also smell of fresh citrus fruits. Plus citrus is not only good for its smell, but also adds to the solution's cleaning power. The best part is that there's no right or wrong way of doing this recipe. Just add orange or lemon peels to a container filled with white vinegar (or whatever vinegar your recipe calls for), add herbs if you like and let it stay for about two weeks (or more). After it has stayed enough time, strain it and dilute with water. You might further add essential oil if you like.

2. Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda after cleaning with vinegar, then rinse with water (use a sponge, cloth or a mop). This will not only remove the vinegar smell but is also another good organic cleaning solution.
As for oils going rancid, you can repeat the same ritual on surfaces that you notice have started developing a foul oil smell. Usually after doing so a few times, even if the stench is strong, it should be gone.

3. Open Those Doors and Windows
I don't understand why anyone would go into the trouble of buying all kinds of special scented sprays, or running a dehumidifier. Just create an air flow, let the cleaned surface dry and the smell will be surely gone. However do not ever run your air conditioner, as it can suck in the smell of vinegar, so your worst nightmares come true. Whenever you start your air conditioner it will fiercely blow with the stench of vinegar for some time. The same goes for tobacco smoke. And keep in mind that cleaning your air conditioner from bad smells also calls for a vinegar solution. Better start making that scented one!

Tips:
1.Best use a glass jar for the scented solution.
2.Before applying any cleaning solution or finish to wooden surfaces, be sure to inspect them in case of a woodworm pests. Yes, and these are very tricky to identify and spot, because most of these bugs spend their whole life cycle inside the wood. Here's a good guide on how to spot wood boring beetles or woodworm infestations.
