Although not the best time to catch big bass, the month of June is one of the most favorable times of the year to make consistent catches. During June, bass tend to spread out, and anglers can find some fish shallow, some deep and some in between. As a result, for successful bass fishing in June, use a variety of lures, fish in a variety of places and catch bass. - Bass spawn in shallow water when the water temperatures are in the 60s, so in June find bass still in shallow water. Focus on shallow coves of reservoirs and bays of lakes with shallow cover such as boat docks, timber, trees and vegetation. Fish tight to cover when the skies are bright, and fish in the vicinity of shallow cover during the morning and evening and any time clouds or wind reduces light penetration into the water. Choose fast-moving lures like spinnerbaits and buzzbaits for locating active bass. When the bass are tight to, or within, cover, use tubes and worms.
- Bass lurk somewhere between the shallows where they spawned and the deep water where they will spend the warm-water months. Start the search in 5- to 10-feet of water adjacent to spawning areas. As bass leave the shallows, they stop at the first drop-off or weed edge they encounter, so focus on these areas. Crankbaits and lipless crankbaits are efficient at covering water and locating active bass. Slow down and fish with a jig, tube or worm once you locate a concentration of bass.
- The majority of bass like water shallower than 8 feet in June. But deeper water can hold some bass, especially females, which leave the shallows before the males. Weed edges in about 15 feet of water will hold the majority of these fish during June. Deep weed lines don't hold fish at this time, but any fish you catch likely will be good-sized females. Select a crankbait that runs deep enough to bump the bottom, or choose a mushroom-head jig and plastic worm.
- Top-water baits are effective search baits during June. However, on some days in June bass will not hit top water--especially if they have just spawned--so throw the lure every so often to check for willing biters. Good top-water lures include buzzbaits and poppers, and the best areas to fish them are around shallow cover or over vegetation.
