Public Still Against Healthcare Reform

Supporters of healthcare reform believed that opposition would decline after the legislation became farther removed from the political process by which it was passed. Their assumption was that more Americans would come around once they began experiencing the short-term benefits promised by the law. The Obama administration has announced more details about how several of those generally popular provisions will be enacted. These include the extension of health coverage for young adults on their parents' insurance until the age of 27, tax credits for small businesses, and most recently funding for biomedical research.

Unfortunately for Democrats, this optimistic view has not come to pass. In fact, public opinion about affordable health insurance reform has remained steady: that is, split with fierce opposition. As expected, opinions are generally divided along party lines. According to a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 44 percent have an unfavorable view of the law.

Touting its benefits will most likely fail to convince this heavily Republican group; about a one-in-three share of that group has retained their "very unfavorable" opinions over the past month. The election primary season has only served to make their feelings more intense.

The majority of independent voters, who will be key in the tough House and Senate midterm elections this November, view healthcare reform unfavorably. Only 37 percent of registered independents view the law generally favorably. 49 percent of them have generally negative views of it.

The news is not all bad for the backers of affordable health insurance reform: they have held support at a 41 percent level this month, mostly from registered Democrats. The main issue is that their positive opinions are less intense than the negative ones from the other side. Fewer people hold "very favorable" views of the law than they did in April. Will that be enough to inspire them to get out to the polls this fall?
