The country of New Zealand consists of two major islands: North Island and South Island. In this article the traveler can find information about what places to see in the South Island.
Malborough region is located at the top of South Island. It is a wine paradise with more than 40 vineyards organizing wine-tasting tours. Marine activities such as diving, sailing and swimming with dolphins are also popular between the visitors.
South of Marlborough we find Christchurch, the largest city of South Island and second large in New Zealand, after Auckland. Get an English flavor since it is known as the most English city outside England. The Anglican cathedral in the city centre helps maintaining this reputation. Museums, beautiful gardens, Maori exhibitions and the Antarctic centre will keep you busy for several days.
Moving west we come across Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, in the West Coast. With the Franz Josef glacier being the most famous between the two, both give the traveler a chance to hike on ice or take a helicopter tour around them.

Deep down the West Coast comes Queenstown, a must for those who like extreme sports. Here you can try any extreme sport you like (bungee jumping, ski diving, rafting, jetboating etc) guided by trained operators. However, keep in mind that such activities cost a lot. Try one or two and just watch other people do the rest
South and west of Queenstown sits Fiorland, one of the most special parts of New Zealand. As indicated by its name several fiords put up a dramatic scenery. Fiorland National Park gives the traveler the opportunity to explore waterfalls, forests, lakes, cliffs and valleys by hiking or kayaking. You are allowed only on two islands (Milford and Doubtful Sound) but can still cruise around the rest.

Steward Island is located at the southwest of South Island. Its Maori name (Rakiura) means glowing sky. That's because it is one of the few places where one may see the Aurora Australis, or southern lights. 85% of the island is a protected area that belongs to the Rakiura National Park where the visitor can admire the unspoiled nature and wildlife. The small fishing village of Oban and its friendly people worth a visit as well.

These are the main places one must see when visiting the South Island of New Zealand. If you have more time also try Waitaki, Dunedin and lake Wanaka.
