When I was a lad ...

by Kirstin:

When I was a lad ...
The fathers made us get permission six months before,
And that was just for the one day.

When I was a lad ...
The door was shut if you didn't have flowers,
Some of us even had to sell our shoes.

When I was a lad ...
We didn't have carriages, just dirty wagons, so we walked,
It was uphill both ways.

When I was a lad ...
We got blisters on our feet, from walking,
After all, we had sold our shoes for the flowers.

When I was a lad ...
We picked her up; a shotgun was waiting,
We dropped her off; a shotgun was waiting.

When I was a lad ...
Holding hands was a negative unless the father was between you,
So kissing was definitely out.

Now I am a grandfather ...
Sitting in the park, seeing couples around me,
Holding hands and kissing, no father-in-the-middle.

Now I am a grandfather ...
I see no flowers and they all have shoes.
I doubt they will see a shotgun tonight.

When I was a lad ...
Valentine's Day scared me witless.
Now I am a grandfather ...
And I miss the good ol' days!
