How to Install a Mud Floor

    • 1). Clean the area where the mud floor will be installed, removing any debris or loose materials that might interfere with the creation of a level floor. If the adobe mud floor is being installed directly onto a concrete foundation or existing cement floor, scrub it to remove any dirt or contaminants that might be left on the floor's surface.

    • 2). Mix the mud and sand with water according to package directions on the adobe mud mixture. Use the mortar mixer to ensure a good consistency for your final product. Place the mixture into five-gallon buckets for ease of transport and pouring if desired.

    • 3). Pour the mud mixture onto the area where you are installing the floor, using shovels and trowels to distribute it across the floor and smooth it to a thickness of approximately 1 inch. Use a knife or scraper to cut a large grid (similar to the look of large tiles) in order to help prevent cracking as the adobe mud dries.

    • 4). Allow the base layer of the mud to dry completely. Mix a new batch of mud, making sure that a fine sand (120 grit or better) is used.

    • 5). Pour the new mud onto the old, once again smoothing it with the shovels and trowels in order to create a smooth and even floor surface. Use a level to ensure that the floor itself will be flat once it dries, and re-score the previous grid as you cover it up with new mud.

    • 6). Allow the new layer of mud to dry completely for at least one to three days. Sweep over it to remove any loose sand or dried mud that may be on the surface.
