Gift Ideas for a Neighbor Moving to a Retirement Home
- When someone you care about, like a neighbor, is moving to a retirement home, it can be difficult to think of a perfect gift. Retirement homes often have restrictions as to the items their residents can have--food is often prepared onsite, and space is at a premium. However, there are many consumable or practical items that can be given as gifts.
- While many seniors enjoy sending and receiving mail, it can be difficult to leave the retirement home to pick out a birthday or get well card. A stationery kit makes a great gift for a new retirement home resident, allowing her to stay in touch without the hassle of going to the store. Choose a selection of cards for a variety of occasions. Pair them with some stamps and a few nice pens.
- Retirement home residents may spend a great deal of time alone. Stave off boredom by choosing a selection of reading materials, DVDs, or a hand-held gaming system. Choose shows you know your neighbor enjoys on DVD or purchase a book that you know he's been wanting to read. Crossword puzzles or number puzzles also make great gifts. If you know your neighbor's new address, you might consider purchasing a magazine subscription, game rental subscription or movie subscription; if you don't know the address, give a gift certificate for this type of service.
- Seniors often struggle to keep their body temperature consistent because of poor circulation. Your neighbor might enjoy a special blanket or throw to cuddle up in, or a sweater to ward off the chill.
If you decide to purchase clothing, be sure to choose items that have large buttons and easy to work fasteners--many seniors also struggle with fasteners, and small buttons and tricky closures may present a challenge. Nursing homes often recommend that blankets and throws be free of holes or lacy patterns, so avoid blankets or afghans with lacy crochet patterns or loose weaves. This type of blanket can catch on medical equipment and may be inconvenient for retirement home staff.
