An Interview with Danny Duncan of We The Kings (Cont.)

RC: One thing I have to ask about – you guys seem to be known about being unapologetically pop, to shy away from heavier sounds. First, is that true?

DD: It depends. Our first record was pretty straightforward and Smile Kid was a little heavier. I guess were just finding a little balance in the sound.

RC: Where does your love for poppier sounds stem from?

DD: I've always been a fan of poppier sounds like The Beatles and Michael Jackson.

Some of the catchiest songs in the world are pop.

RC: Who would you say helped influence that sound?

DD: We play all kinds of music when we all get in a room and just start to jam. One of the songs on Smile Kid, called “Promise The Stars,” kind of has a swing-country feel to it. That came from just playing what we felt sounded the best. That’s how all of our songs are written; we just play what we feel makes the song sound better.

RC: Do you guys feel that pop – especially pop punk - gets less respect in the music scene in general than does music with an edgier sound? Is there any justification in that?

DD: That is one of those questions that depends entirely on who you ask, and if you’re asking me, I would say no. There’s always going to be somebody, somewhere, who doesn't think what you're doing is as good as someone else, no matter what you do. A lot of people support our albums and come to our shows. We’re a thriving band for that exact reason. That’s all the respect we could ask for.

RC: And I can’t ignore that you guys are on S-Curve records, with none other than Mr. Tom Jones himself. How cool is that?

DD: Tom Jones is the man! I once heard a rumor that he insured his chest hair for millions of dollars. I don’t think that’s true, but that’s still something you can’t ignore. The man may or may not insure his chest hair. I can’t even grow chest hair. It’s so cool to be label mates with someone like that. Its funny because once we found out about him being with S-Curve, all of our moms were asking if we were gonna meet him and seeing if we could get autographs. He still has the hearts of many women. We have yet to meet him though.

RC: Any chances of an S-Curve tour, with you and he on the road together?

DD: Ha-ha, I wish. Do you know how much we'd learn about performing from him? Also, making a grown woman pass out from a wink is something I’m still working on. He does that for breakfast...
