How to Cure a Skillet
- 1). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2). Fold or wad the paper towel into a small bundle and dip it into the shortening.
- 3). Spread the shortening generously across the inside bottom, sides and rim of the pan using the paper towel as an applicator. Add more shortening to the paper towel if necessary to get a good coating.
- 4). Turn the pan upside down on a baking sheet and place it in the oven.
- 5). Cure the skillet for an hour. Turn off the stove and allow the pan to come to room temperature in the oven.
- 6). Remove the cold skillet from the oven and wipe it with paper towels to get any excess grease off the pan.
