    Cleaning Products

    • Use organic cleansers to clean your birdbath. Anything with harsh chemicals could be harmful to the birds who will visit the birdbath and drink water from it. You can also use a bleach water solution; dilute a 10 percent solution and soak the surface of the birdbath in it for approximately 30 minutes, then rinse with clean water.

    Cleaning Tools

    • You can use a putty knife to scrape off the dried-on mess on your birdbath. You may also need a wire brush to accomplish this, such as the type you might use to clean off a grill. Then you can use a soft rag when you have removed most of the debris, and apply your cleaning solution with this rag. If your birdbath is made of metal, you may want to use the soft rag or a scrubbing sponge only, as the putty knife or wire brush might scratch the surface.

    Prevent Algae and Mosquitoes

    • To keep the water in your birdbath free of mosquitoes and algae, visit your local pet store and pick up a copper chelation solution. These are solutions which are normally used in fish tanks; however, they are animal-friendly and therefore ideal for birdbaths as well. You can apply this solution once weekly during the summer months by adding one drop of solution for every gallon of water. In the winter, you can reduce the frequency of your application based on the presence of algae in your birdbath.
