How to Carve Moose Antlers
- 1). Search for moose antlers in wooded areas where moose are prevalent, such as in Alaska or Canada, or purchase antlers from an online vendor. Clean antlers thoroughly by boiling them for a half an hour in a large pot. Let the antlers dry and cool completely.
- 2). Sketch out the design you want to carve on the moose antler with a pencil. Put on your dust mask and goggles. Begin to chisel away your design with the electric carving tool. You are working in low relief or bas-relief, meaning the carved forms will be raised up slightly from the background. Remember that you can't add on if you chip too much away, so remove pieces a little bit at a time. Carve the large shapes first, and add the small detail work last.
- 3). Sand the antler until it is smooth. Dust or vacuum off the finished antler. Seal it with a clear sealant. Allow to dry for 24 hours before mounting.
