Closing Instructions for a Swimming Pool
- 1). Adjust the swimming pool water with chemicals to achieve the proper balance. Align the pH of the water so it is between 7.2 and 7.6 a few days before you want to close the pool.
- 2). Apply chlorine to shock the pool with at least 1 lb. per 10,000 gallons of water. Adjust the chlorine level to 1 to 3 parts per million. The calcium hardness should fall in the range of 180 to 220 parts per million. The alkalinity should be in the range of 80 to 120 parts per million.
- 3). Lower the water level if necessary to prepare the pool for the cover.
- 4). Clean the pool thoroughly with a pool vacuum or net. The pool should be as clean as possible.
- 5). Remove all cleaning tools, skimmer baskets, and other equipment from the pool and store securely.
- 6). Drain all pumps, filters, and other equipment. Remove the drain plugs from pumps with an adjustable wrench and allow the water to drain from the equipment. Clean filters and pumps and store in a secure place.
- 7). Blow out all water lines if possible. If you can't remove the water from the lines, use a swimming pool antifreeze product to make sure the lines don't freeze.
- 8). Cover the pool. Make sure the cover is tight and will not allow debris such as leaves to get into the pool. A mesh safety cover is best.
