What Blogging Has Taught Me in 7 Months Online
Where do I begin? This subheading is fitting on so many levels, because when I sat down and started to think about everything I have learned in the last 7 months of blogging - I was completely and utterly overwhelmed.
I remember this feeling all too well actually - and herein lies the first lesson, and one that took me too long to figure out.
It's OK to be overwhelmed and confused.
I know that sounds like a line from Dr.
Phil - but it really is something that most humans tend to forget when entering into something new and unknown.
We want to know everything at once, but ironically - as soon as you accept that this is never going to happen, you start picking things up like it's nobody's business.
But these two points alone will not help the newbie blogger, because they are just two more pieces of information, floating randomly - without context or order, and this is half the bloody problem! Without Process you are dead in the water before you begin, because it is process that creates a framework for all the random knowledge you have to start clinging to.
Making sense? Allow me to further clarify the point by going all Genesis on you (and, no - I am not about to give you my rendition of 'Easy Lover' - although if requested enough...
) In the Beginning there was the Internet.
And then came 'Information Overload', that is - Random pieces of information floating against an overwhelming backdrop of chaos (the Internet) And God said 'Let there be Process' And he saw that it was AWESOME.
(and promptly changed His name to Darren Rowse and started blogging) The Importance Of Leverage and the Power of Syndication As I mentioned about 4 inches ago, these are the two biggest tips I could give to myself If I could go back in time to when I first started blogging, after of course I had given myself an uppercut for starting blogging in the first place LOL! (you'll understand soon enough;) ) Every time you write or create a piece of content, you are holding internet gold.
A unique piece of content that is posted on your blog and only shared with your Twitter and Facebook friends is wasted wasted wasted, and the sooner you understand AND incorporate the power of leveraging that content - the sooner you are going to see your blog take off.
Oh - I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the Duplicate Content Penalty DOES NOT EXIST.
Stop worrying about it already and just go out and share that content with anyone that will take it.
Syndicate like it's going out of fashion.
Aside from the fact that there is nothing fashionable about syndicating content, it is still the best advice I could offer myself as a new blogger.
Syndication is just a fancy way of answering the 'how do I leverage my content?' question, because all you are doing is sharing what you have with RSS, Web 2.
0,Profiles, Social Bookmarking services, Directories, Feeds, Feed Directories!?!?!..
the list goes on, and gets endlessly more confusing the deeper you go.
(which is why we have a process in place:) ) Advice: Learn the lay of the land - get to know where you need to be and how you get there, and then do that! Define your Keywords This is actually the best advice I could give, because a lot of newbie bloggers are also new to internet marketing in general, so keywords are foreign to them.
I have joked many a time about how I spent the first 2 months of my online career optimising for the keyword 'Click Here' so I thought it only fitting to include this invaluable piece of advice in this journey back in time post.
As soon as you have defined your niche and your blog, do some keyword research and define 5 or 6 broad and specific key phrases that fit well.
I am not going into the specifics of how to or why, or even what we should be looking for in relation to competition and search volume - that's what my entire blog is for:), but needless to say, the important point is that you do two things.
I could think of a thousand more tidbits and pointers that I could share with you (myself) but that was exactly what every well meaning blogger was doing in the first place - and a fat lot of good it did me back then.
Stop bombarding yourself with information and just start posting content and engaging with your readers.
It's Blogging, it's not rocket science.

The learning curve associated with anything new is hugely lessened when the power of action is involved, but the power of action is stopped dead in it's tracks when a craving for too much information is involved. The Power or Process I think if I had to share one thing I wish I knew when I first started blogging - it would be to understand the importance of leverage and the power of syndication.
Trust me on that one;)

- Define 5 or 6 Keyphrases for your niche/blog
- Use these Keywords consistently in every possible inbound and outbound link (and make as many excuses as possible to do so)
- Create a process/routine for how you are going to syndicate your posts and leverage your content after you have published, then do it!
- Post and engage as often as bloody possible, making sure to stick to your process/routine like glue.
- Define 5 or 6 Key Phrases for your niche and consistently target (use) these in every possible hyperlink to and from your blog
