Established:

The Claremont Museum of Art in Claremont, California, was established in 1987 by a group of local artists.

As of 2014, the Museum does not have a building, so it stores the permanent collection, occasionally exhibiting it in various venues in the area.

History:

The Claremont Museum of Art originated in 1987 when several local artists discussed establishing a museum for the community inside the town's theater.

As the theater was being renovated and not available for exhibitions, another space, the College Heights Lemon Packing House, was chosen.

In 2006, the Museum officially opened in the Packing House. The Museum also expanded its mission, and besides showing the work of Claremont artists from its permanent collection, showed national and international artists.

Unfortunately, the recession hit hard, and the Museum's board realized they could not support operations any longer, so they closed the space and stored the collection.

Currently (as of 2014), a newly reorganized Board and a staff of volunteers are working to build a “Museum without Walls.”
