Our hair is made up of proteins and it also has a cycle. They grow, rest and they fall out. This cycle repeats every year. At any given time, 10 percent of the scalp hair is falling out and the shedding of 50 to 100 strands of hair a day is normal. After shedding, hair is replaced by a new one from the same follicle it fell out. Our nails and hair have the same composition, they are made of proteins. In order to maintain normal hair growth, we should eat food rich in protein. However, when we reach 50 years of age, most of us will experience loss of hair.
Heredity and old age is not the only cause of loss of hair. Some other causes include pregnancy, high fever, major surgery, too much stress and lack of protein. During pregnancy, women do not shed their hair, but after delivery, much of the hair enter the resting stage all at the same time and fall out in large amounts. Within three months after experiencing severe stress like family problems or divorce, very high fever or infection, we may also experience loss of hair. These causes of loss of hair usually do not need any treatment because they correct themselves.
Medical treatments also cause loss of hair. Prescription drugs used to treat gout and blood thinners can cause lots of falling hair. Drugs used in chemotherapy to treat cancer causes massive hair loss and patients usually lose all of their hair. These kinds of hair loss are temporary and hair grows back after treatment. Birth control pills also sometimes cause loss of hair for women who have inherited thinning hair.
Another cause of loss of hair is alopecia areata. This can affect anyone of any age. In here, clumps of hair fall out resulting to smooth round patches. Androgenic alopecia, male or female baldness, is the most common type of hair loss. This type is progressive and is inherited from the parents.
There are many treatments available for the loss of hair. There is the propecia which is prescribed only for men. Rogaine, which can be used by both men and women, is rubbed directly on the scalp. And if you want instant hair, you could always use a hair piece or hair extenders. Hair transplants, wherein healthy hair is placed in areas of hair loss, are also available nowadays.
