How to Determine If Your Computer With Vista Is Being Monitored

    • 1). Check your computer for VNC (virtual network computing) software. This is software such as "GoToMyPC," which allows you to remotely control your own computer. However, someone else can also use this software to remotely connect to (and monitor) your computer if you leave it running in the background during normal activities.

    • 2). Right-click on the task bar and press "Task Manager" or press "CTRL+ALT+DEL" to determine all your VNC processes. Look for the application in the Applications area and then right-click and press "Go to Process." Search the internet to determine if the program you are looking at is the real deal by searching for the specific process name that corresponds to the program. If you come up with malware, then your computer may be being monitored.

    • 3). Determine the ports that the offending software programs are using. To do this, click "Start," then "Control Panel," and select "Security." Then click "Allow a program through Windows Firewall." Deselect the box of any suspicious programs. If you still require these programs, remove and reinstall them.

    • 4). Open the Task Manager to the Processes menu by pressing "CTRL+ALT+ESC." The only user names you should see are your own, Local Service, Network Service and System. Anything else and you've got a remote monitor.
