While it's nice to put the past school year out of our heads for a while, we need to keep next year's school start date in mind to ensure we can fit in vacations, checkups, back-to-school shopping and other summer stuff before the new year begins. Find Orlando area starting dates for the 2015-2016 school year below, along with some basic information about getting your student enrolled.

Florida Requirements for Kindergarten and First Grade

By Florida law, if your child turns 5 years old on or before September 1, 2015, he or she is eligible to enter kindergarten at the public elementary school for which you are zoned. Waivers are not granted for children who don't meet this enrollment requirement. If your child turns 6 years old on or before September 1, 2015, and has completed kindergarten, he or she is eligible to enter first grade at the public elementary school for which you are zoned.

Note that if your child completed kindergarten at a private school but does not turn 6 on or before September 1, 2015, he or she will not be eligible to enroll in first grade at your public school; your child will only be enrolled in kindergarten.

General Enrollment Procedures for Florida Public Schools

If your child will be entering the next grade at the same school or the initial grade at the next level school in the same zone, the enrollment will go through automatically, and you shouldn't have to do anything. Of course, if you receive a request for proof of residency or other information, be sure to provide it by the deadline you’re given.

If you're moving and need to enroll your child in a school in a different zone, you'll need to withdraw your child from the school he or she will automatically be enrolled in and follow new student registration procedures.

To enroll a new student, you'll have to provide a birth certificate or valid passport for verification of legal name and age, proof of immunization and a physical exam, verification of academic history, official documentation for any relevant special education (e.g., IEP, 504 plan, etc.), proof of residency in the school zone, and verification of your guardianship.

Special rules exist for enrollment in OCPS magnet programs.
